Former NFL linebacker Trevor Reilly mysteriously resigned from his role on Deion Sanders’ staff prior to the start of Colorado football’s fall camp. No further information has been provided at this point.
He previously served as the special teams coordinator in Boulder for the last 20 months.
Reilly began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Utah, in 2018. Coach Prime gave his first shot in a full-time role with Jackson State in 2021 and brought him to Colorado in 2023.
Well Off Media filmed a unique interaction between Sanders and Reilly during spring practice in early March. Buffaloes coaches are not allowed to wear non-athletic attire in the team facility but Reilly wore jeans. Sanders said he has “diplomatic immunity.” Wide receivers coach Jason Phillips light-heartedly called out the head coach’s double standard to raise “accountability” within the organization.
Colorado started fall camp on July 28. Reilly was no longer with the program. He reportedly resigned.
Not long thereafter, on August 9, Reilly was in Hawaii. His brother used to play quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors. Defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman coached Reilly on the New York Jets in 2014 and worked with him at Jackson State in 2021 and 2022, as well as with Colorado in 2023.
The Buffaloes held its annual media day on Aug. 9 while Reilly visited his former coach and friend.
The reason for Trevor Reilly’s sudden resignation is unknown. However, for him to stick through the spring and the entire offseason only to step down just days before the official start of the new season is strange.
There is a reason for the decision, obviously, but neither Reilly nor Colorado provided any clarity on the matter. The silence on the departure, which was not formally announced or reported on until almost a month after it happened, leaves the door wide open for speculation. What happened?!
