In a story that feels like it could only ever happen in college football, disgraced former Michigan assistant Connor Stalions is now coaching at the high school of the Wolverines’ top recruiting target, five-star QB Bryce Underwood.
Underwood is the No. 1 recruit in the nation in the class of 2025 according to 247Sports. He’s currently committed to LSU and has been for about a year, but Michigan is reportedly ready to pay huge money in order to get the in-state prospect to flip.
Stalions, meanwhile, began the high school season as a defensive coordinator at a small school in Detroit. He was later elevated to interim head coach when the full-time head coach suffered a health scare.
Now CBS News reports that Stallions is set to join Belleville High School, where Underwood plays, for the postseason.
“I called Coach Will (McMichaels) and asked him if he knew of any reliable help that could assist us during the playoffs and he recommended Connor,” Belleville’s head coach Dejuan Rogers said.
Stalions is reportedly acting as the offensive playcaller for the Tigers.
“Connor…he’s been a great tool for us in enhancing how we attack opposing defenses,” Rogers said.
Belleville is 10-1 on the season and won its first two playoff games by a combined score of 110-7.
Now, how much of that is due to Stalions remains to be seen. It makes life a lot easier when you have the No. 1 high school football player in the nation.
Underwood, meanwhile, appears firmly committed to LSU for the time being.
He attended the Tigers’ huge showdown with Alabama over the weekend and reportedly liked what he saw.
“LSU right now is top 10 in the country in passing offense. Michigan is third from the bottom, 130 out of 133, so fourth from the bottom,” On3 Sports‘ Shea Dixon recently noted.
But the Wolverines are prepared to back up the Brinks truck. And it appears they’re willing to try anything and everything to get Underwood to stay home.
