After three weeks, the final of Copa America 2024, the soccer tournament involving all of the teams from the South American confederation, CONMEBOL, and the top teams from CONCACAF, is finally upon us. Sadly, like many times before in the tournament, hosted by the USA, it’s been marred by news that have nothing to do with the players playing.
Security gates were breached by anxious fans ahead of the official gate opening time at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, causing chaos and raising concerns about security protocols for the 2026 World Cup that will be hosted in North America.
Security gate breaches are not rare in soccer, as fans often do them as a way of trying to get into the match without a ticket. It’s something that is pretty rare in the USA, though. And, it appears that that security was simply not prepared to deal with the threat.
Take a look.

Of course, when a ton of people who don’t have a ticket enter an event they shouldn’t be at, that means the stadium is going to have to turn away people who have legitimate tickets. That’s exactly what has appeared to have happened.

Kickoff, scheduled for 8PM ET, has been delayed due to the gate storming.

Earlier this week, Uruguayan players stormed into the stands to fight Colombian fans. Uruguayan players claim they were trying to defend their families.
While Copa America is mostly being run by CONMEBOL as opposed to US Soccer, the lapses and complaints about bad pitches need to be sorted out before the USA opens its doors to the world in two years time.
Update: kick time for the final has been pushed back to 9:15PM . Chaos has completely taken over.
