NFL teams were allowed to begin negotiating with free agent players on March, March 10, leading to a bevy of deals being struck. One team that’s been quiet in the market so far, however, has been the Dallas Cowboys.
After the first day of free agency, the Cowboys have must just a few signings: re-signing long snapper Trent Sieg to a 3-year $4.45 million deal and inking wide receiver/returner KaVontae Turpin to a three-year deal that makes him the highest-paid special teams player in NFL history.
In addition to their lack of early moves in free agency, Jerry Jones has also been receiving heat this offseason for his decision to promote Brian Schottenheimer from offensive coordinator to head coach.
The Cowboys — wh0 had a similarly quiet offseason prior to last year’s disappointing 7-10 campaign, which saw the team miss out of the playoffs — lack of urgency in the free agent market has caught the attention of both angry Cowboys fans and the bemused football world, as evidenced by the viral tweets on social media.
“Jerry Jones must feel fantastic. He can literally do whatever he wants with the Cowboys from now on and it’ll be fine, because at least he didn’t trade Luka Doncic,” one fan joked.
“What if instead of the Cowboys announcing a free agent signing they announce Jerry Jones death instead,” a Cowboys fan sniped.
“Jerry and Stephen Jones watched the Eagles draft well, sign Saquon Barkley in free agency, win a Super Bowl and they said ‘yeah I ain’t doing all that,'” a third quipped.
“As long as Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones are in control, nothing will ever change,” a defeated Big D fan bemoaned.
The Cowboys certainly face an uphill battle to win the NFC East, let alone contend for the Super Bowl, as the division now boasts the two teams who featured in last season’s NFC title game, the latter of which won the Super Bowl, in the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles.
As far as the bookies concerned, the Cowboys are massive long shots to win the Super Bowl as they current have futures odds of +5000, which is on par with the likes of Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
