UCONN landed incredible news for the future of its budding dynasty on Monday. Head coach Dan Hurley is staying put!

Hurley has reportedly been the top target of the Los Angeles Lakers, who are looking to fill an open position following the firing of Darvin Ham. After meeting with LA brass, and talking things over with his family, the head coach has opted to remain a Husky.

What’s that mean for Connecticut? Well, the program will now have a chance to build on the immense success seen in recent seasons without the threat of a potential rebuild.

Rather than worrying about keeping a roster and coaching staff together, the Huskies can turn attention towards a three-peat.

As for the Lakers, the denial means the coaching search will continue. Maybe a second look for JJ Redick?

With the news of his decision going public on Monday afternoon, some details in the negotiation process are beginning to be revealed. That includes the offer that Los Angeles was willing to make.

Reports have been circulating showing that the Lakers had a six-year, $70M deal lined up for Dan Hurley. While that significantly exceeded what the Huskies were able to provide, it appears money was not the only motivating factor.

Darren Rovell broke it down further in a reply to the differing deals, showing what things would look like on an annual basis with taxes taken into consideration.

Lakers deal, after taxes, is worth net of $6 million a year. UConn deal, after taxes, is worth $4.6 million.

A $1.4M pay cut to stay put!

It’s been reported throughout this courting that family ties to the East Coast would play a large role in negotiations. That certainly seems to have been the case!

Rather than test the NBA waters, Dan Hurley will return to college basketball as one of the nation’s top names. UCONN just picked up its first win of the 2024-25 season.
