New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has struggled throughout the first week of training camp, according to reports.

Jones, who is coming off a season in which he tore the ACL in his right knee, has been struggling to such an extent that Giants beat reporter Connor Hughes — who also covers the Jets for New York-based outlet SNY (home of the Mets!) — suggested that recently-signed back-up quarterback Drew Lock should get some first-team reps over the 27-year-old former Duke signal-caller.

“Jones, though, has missed backs in the flat and receivers short near the sideline at an alarming rate,” Hughes reported.

“Rust is expected for the Giants quarterback — an excuse, sure, but a justified one. Maybe, just maybe, more time will transport Jones back to the player who led the Giants to that improbable playoff victory in Minnesota two years ago. Or maybe this is just the player Jones is now. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen must be ready for that reality and turn to Drew Lock if so.”

Jones’ struggles at training camp have been present for all to see, as a video of the former first-round pick airmailing a simple screen pass went viral on social media last week.

The Giants drafted Jones out of Duke University with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In those 59 games, Jones’ record is 22-36-1, and he’s completed 64.3% of his passes for 12,512 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 40 interceptions. He’s also an effective rusher, running the ball 332 times for 1,914 yards and 13 touchdowns in his career.

Big Blue will be hoping that the selection of former Lousiana State University wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft will help Jones return to the player he was during the 2022 season, which was the best of his career and the only time the Giants have made the playoffs since drafting him.
