Despite much of the fanbase being ready to cut ties and move on, the New York Giants are plowing ahead with Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback this season.

Although it’s the very early days of training camp, Daniel Jones certainly hasn’t done anything to quell the concerns of Big Blue nation as a clip of him air-mailing a simple screen pass has gone viral this week.

“How does Daniel Jones still have fans?” said one reply to the video.

“No Saquon to pull off the spectacular one-handed catch and break two tackles just to get back to the line of scrimmage,” tweeted another.

Jones was drafted by the Giants out of Duke University with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The 27-year-old signal-caller has largely been the franchise’s starting QB since, as he’s started in 59 games since 2019.

In those 59 games, Jones’ record is 22-36-1, and he’s completed 64.3% of his passes for 12,512 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 40 interceptions. Jones is also a threat on the ground, as he’s carried the ball 332 times for 1,914 yards and 13 touchdowns.

His best season came in 2022 when he set career highs in starts, attempts, completions, passing yards, average yards per pass, interceptions, quarterback rating, rushing attempts, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns. The Giants also made the playoffs that season and head coach Brian Daboll was named the NFL’s Coach of the Year.

The Giants were in a position to select a quarterback in this year’s draft as they had the sixth overall pick. Instead of drafting a new QB, however, the Giants clearly are trying to help the one they currently have as they picked LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers.

Jones and the Giants will begin their 2024 campaign when they host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, September 8 at MetLife Stadium. There aren’t many teams in the NFL that the Giants will be favored against this season, but the Vikings — with either Sam Darnold or rookie QB J.J. McCarthy under center — are likely one of them.
