Former UAB offensive lineman Daniel Mincey reportedly entered the transfer portal prior to his redshirt sophomore season of college football. He is currently on trial for attempted murder and assault.

His preliminary hearing was scheduled for Jan. 8 but it is unclear as to how it went.

This surprising entry into the college football transfer portal is only surprising because nobody expected Mincey to try to get back on the field this soon. Is there a school out there that is willing give him a second chance?

Daniel Mincey stabbed his teammate at UAB.

The University of Alabama-Birmingham was absolutely terrible in 2025. Head coach Trent Dilfer was finally fired halfway through the year. The Blazers somehow beat No. 22-ranked Memphis without him and closed out the season with a win at Tulsa to finish at 4-8. They ultimately promoted interim head coach Alex Mortensen (son of late ESPN legend Chris Mortensen) to the full-time job in December.

His promotion was a little bit of a surprise, given how things went down on Senior Day.

Two UAB lineman (one offense, one defense) got into a fight during practice on Nov. 21. They were both sent home early. Nobody thought much of it.

And then a fight broke out in the breakfast line on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 22.

Daniel Mincey pulled out a knife and stabbed the other teammate who was involved in the practice scuffle less than 24 hours prior. He was arrested by authorities while two other players were transported to the hospital with stab wounds. The gruesome details of the incident were truly bizarre. It happened just a few hours before the final home game of the season.

The third involved player, Joshua Underwood, later revealed his side of the story. He tried to stop the altercation between Mincey and JaSire Peterson before he realized there was a knife and suffered a severe hand wound.

The latest addition to the college football transfer portal is on trial for attempted murder.

Court documents show a judge granted Daniel Mincey’s request to live at an undisclosed address in Florida ahead of his preliminary hearing on Jan. 8. He was expected to plead guilty to attempted murder and assault as a youthful offender. The judge ordered probation services to conduct a youthful offender investigation before his plea hearing.

It is currently unclear as to whether Mincey’s hearing took place on Thursday as scheduled. As is the outcome.

However, according to On3, the rising redshirt sophomore offensive lineman officially entered the transfer portal on the morning of Jan. 12, 2026. Remember, this is after he stabbed his teammate.

Perhaps Mincey received a cushiony plea deal that will keep him out of prison. Maybe he got probation.

Either way, I find it hard to believe that another Division-I college football program would extend an offer to any player who recently stabbed a teammate over a fight during practice. Especially a backup offensive lineman who has not played in more than a few games on two teams over two seasons.

Perhaps there will be a chance to continue his career at a ‘Last Chance U’ type of program. We’ll see…
