a month ago, after he was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Boston Red Sox, we gave you the heads up that Danny Jensen could become the first player in Major League Baseball to play for two teams in the same game. And today, it happened.

Prior to being traded to the Boston Red Sox on July 27, Danny Jansen started at catcher for the Blue Jays in a game against the Red Sox on June 26. That game, however, was suspended due to rain in the top of the second inning.

In the two months since, however, Jansen has switched teams, resulting in him playing catcher for the Red Sox when the game officially resumed on Monday, August 26, thus making Jansen the first player in the history of baseball to technically play for two teams in the same game.

Ironically enough, the June 26 game between the Red Sox and Blue Jays was called while Jansen was at the plate. Upon the resumption of the game, the batter who replaces Jansen in Toronto’s lineup will inherit his 0-1 count. That player wound up being Daulton Varsho, who struck out with Jansen catching the pitches behind him

Thus far this season, Jansen is batting .212 at the plate with six home runs and 18 RBIs. The 29-year-old catcher was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 16th round of the 2013 MLB Draft before he made his official debut for the team in 2018. At the time of this writing, Jansen has a career batting average of .222 with 73 home runs and 219 RBIs.

“What an oddity, right? What a crazy, crazy thing for baseball this game. People have been asking me and coming up to me to talk about it and stuff, so it’s going to be a cool one,” Jansen said of the situation during an interview with SportsNet.

As the 2024 season enters its final months, the Red Sox find themselves in the thick of a Wild Card race, trailing both the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota twins by 4.5 games for the third and final AL Wild Card spot (as of August 26).
