Players on the New York Giants offense the last few years are used to a lot of criticism. After all, the unit led by quarterback Daniel Jones has consistently been one of the worst in the NFL since Jones came into the league in 2018.
But, when it comes from another NFL player, guys in the league are going to take that personally and stick up for their teammates. That’s exactly what happened this week, as Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton stood up for Daniel Jones after he was dissed by Sauce Gardner.
The Giants and Jets had a joint practice this week and after the practice, Sauce Gardner was not impressed with Daniel Jones.

To be fair to Sauce Gardner, most of the NFL ecosphere is unimpressed with Daniel Jones, and his 4-year $160 million contract is among the worst in football. Thankfully for the Giants, they can mostly get out of the contract after this year, but giving him a fool’s gold extension after a season in which he threw 15 touchdown passes in 2022 has turned out to be disastrous.
Still, teammates stick together, and that’s exactly what wide receiver Darius Slayton did. He stood up for Daniel Jones after those Sauce Gardner comments.
Here’s what he had to say regarding Gardner’s comments.
“I don’t know what his intent was. think I saw a tweet he said maybe he got distracted or something like that and that’s why he paused. But whatever it was, regardless … it’s easy to say negative things once there’s a negative narrative around a person. But it doesn’t always make it — well, in this case it doesn’t make it true. Nor does he see him on a day-in, day-out basis.”
It’s nice to see Darius Slayton, who has turned him into a solid player in his six seasons in the league, stick up for Daniel Jones. But, unless he has a big year this year, the consensus opinion on Daniel Jones is unlikely to change.
