Dave Portnoy Was Riding An Emotional Rollercoaster During Traveler’s Protestor Drama Before Winning $324K

Scottie Scheffler won his 6th tournament of the season on Sunday when he took down the Traveler’s Championship, becoming the first golfer to win 6x in a year since Eldrick ‘Big Cat’ Woods did so back in 2009. Barstool Sports founder and owner Dave Portnoy made $324K off Scottie’s win but not before sweating through the drama on X, formerly Twitter.

I was driving from Savannah, GA to Southwest Florida yesterday and made it home in time to flip on the TV and see Tom Kim sink his putt to force a playoff. Seconds later I got a text from a friend saying ‘Traveler’s is insane right now’ and then I noticed someone scrubbing something off of the green.

My questions were quickly answered, not on TV, but when I hopped in the BroBible Slack room and asked what was up and saw the video of protestors being tackled by security after they stormed the 18th green. The TV broadcast would eventually show a replay of what happened but it took a while as they were more focused on the tournament moving the pin location and the playoff starting.

Needless to say, I missed Dave Portnoy‘s rollercoaster of emotions on X until later but caught up when I saw one of his posts shared in my feed. The Barstool Sports founder had bet $180,000 on Scottie Scheffler at +180 to win $324,000. FYI, there’s some colorful language in this video of Portnoy explaining what was happening:

The protestors had him sweating. And not that Dave Portnoy who is comically rich at this point needs the money, but there’s a case to be made that bets could’ve and should’ve been voided if Scottie lost.

As we all know now, Scottie had an easy 2-putt on the first playoff hole at the Traveler’s Championship to beat his close friend from Dallas, Tom Kim, and secure his 6th win of the season. That win earned Portnoy $324K and he couldn’t help but celebrate:

2024 has been kind to Dave Portnoy at the books. He won $2.1 million after betting $600K on UConn to win it all in the NCAA Tournament. Portnoy won $1.3 million on Scheffler winning The Masters. He also won big on the Super Bowl and Bowl season:

While Scottie Scheffler earned $3.6 million for winning the Traveler’s Championship, Dave Portnoy and other betters have also been getting rich off Scottie all season.

Scottie was +400 to win before the Traveler’s began. Betting on every start he’s had this season has been very lucrative.

According to an article today on PGATour.com, if golfers had bet $1,000 on Scottie to win every time he teed it up this season they would currently be cashing out for $28,000 and up $13,000 (minus their bets) so far this year and it’s only June!
