On Sunday, Lions RB David Montgomery suffered an MCL injury that will keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. He’d recorded 775 yards on the year before coming out of the game, and bettors who were keeping a very close eye on that number suffered one the worst beats you’ll ever encounter as a result.
The Lions had already punched their ticket to the playoffs when they faced off against the Bills on Sunday in a game where Buffalo walked away with a 48-42 victory. However, the loss was overshadowed by the losses Detroit suffered due to the season-ending injuries that impacted Alim McNeil, Carlton Davis, Khalil Dorsey, and David Montgomery.
Dan Campbell made it pretty clear he has faith in the guys who will have to step up to compensate for the players who will no longer be able to contribute to Detroit’s quest to play in a Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history, and Jahmyr Gibbs will likely be shouldering a significantly heavier workload now that the man he’d been splitting carries with has gone down.
There’s only so much you can do to avoid succumbing to an injury when you play in the NFL, and if you’re the kind of sports bettor with a tendency to gamble on individual player props, you do so knowing there’s always a chance they may end up being derailed by an unfortunate setback.
Anyone who’d bet on Montgomery to hit the over on the rushing yards prop that was set at 775.5 yards prior to the start of the season had to be feeling pretty good about that bet when you consider he headed into Sunday’s contest with 771 yards under his belt and had recorded a minimum of 31 yards in the 13 games he’d played prior to that point.
However, the RB only recorded four yards on the five carries he got before he took his final snap just a couple of minutes into the second half, and he subsequently finished the season just one yard shy of the over.
There’s no way to know how many people had money riding on that particular bet, but it’s safe to assume they’re not thrilled with the manner in which they lost it.
