Deion Sanders made it abundantly clear prior to the 2023 college football season that he and Colorado were “coming.” That was not only specific to the gridiron.
Coach Prime wants to win football games, yes. He was hired by the Buffaloes to revive a program that won just one game last year. His job is to stack wins, and maybe one day compete for a national title.
In addition to the on-field goals, Sanders wants to build better men, fathers, husbands, and members of society. That applies to his players and his staff.
Another point of emphasis for Sanders is academics. Education is just as important as the game itself, and he insists that his player excel academically. He encourages them to pursue studies seriously.
In Coach Prime’s eyes, football is temporary but education lasts a lifetime.
Thus, while addressing the media during his weekly press conference on Tuesday, there is a focus on his student-athletes as students as well as athletes. That includes the reading of “Students of the Week” as soon as he sits down at the podium in front of the media.
This week’s recipients included freshman wide receiver Jordan Onovughe. The former three-star recruit arrived in Boulder during the summer and, apparently, hit the books hard. Especially this week!
There was only one issue — Sanders had no idea how to pronounce Onovughe. He didn’t even try at first.
I don’t know how to pronounce Jordan’s last name.
— Deion Sanders
An off-camera assistant (probably the SID) stepped in to help him out with “Oh-no-vway.”
Sanders hilariously responded with “that’s good!” and moved on.
Coach Prime loves to put his Colorado players on blast when they deserve to be put on blast. He loves to shout them out when they deserve a shoutout.
Tuesday’s edition just so happened to include a difficult last name and it led to a hilarious exchange.
