Deion Sanders Handed Punishment After NCAA Recruiting Violation Surrounding Five-Star Prospect

Deion Sanders had thus far avoided any major trouble with the NCAA in his stint as a college football head coach. There were some things here and there, including 11 self-reported violations in his time with Colorado Buffaloes. But up until now, none of those violations had actually amounted to anything more than some light admonishment and course corrections.

However, Sanders’ is now facing some consequences after a violations involving the recruitment of five-star quarterback Julian. Lewis flipped to the Buffs from USC and chose Colorado over several offers from big-time programs across the country.

But prior to Lewis actually signing with the program, Sanders mentioned the elite recruit by name as part of his weekly coaches show. He actually did so twice. That’s a big no-no.

Deion Sanders Misstep Surrounding Julian Lewis Costs Colorado Recruiting Days

Because of those violations, Will Backus of CBS Sports reports that the Colorado coaches show will now be taped rather than live-streamed and the two episodes that mentioned Lewis have been removed from YouTube.

“Sanders will have to attend additional rules education sessions, and the Buffaloes also imposed a reduction of four in-person recruiting days during the 2025 spring contact period,” Backus reports. “Sanders’ coaching show isn’t going away, even if it won’t be livestreamed; instead, the content will be reviewed and edited for potential violations before it is posted.”

The latter part isn’t super important. While most coaches shows are live, a little oversight isn’t really a big deal and it’s not like Colorado donors are busting the door down to attend or listen to a live show. But the reduction in recruiting days is notable, even if it seems small.

Ultimately, it’s not program changing. But it’s just a casual reminds to Sanders that there are, in fact, some rules you have to follow. Although if Lewis ends up a star in Boulder, we’re not sure anyone will care all that much about any improprieties.
