People who don’t know Deion Sanders love to hate Deion Sanders. They call him arrogant and self-important, among many other things.

Meanwhile, people who do know Deion Sanders praise him for his genuine care for others.

This kind of thing often happens in college football and sports in general. Outside opinions frequently present a contrast to reality.

Deion Sanders cares.

Sanders has been dealing with health issues since the beginning of the season. That has not stopped him from being on the sideline, no matter what it takes.

His most recent surgery took place in the middle of last week. It was his 16th different procedure in the last 16 years, which required Karruche Tran to take care of him while at the hospital.

And yet, there he was to lead Colorado out of the tunnel only a few days later.

If just being there was not selfless enough, Sanders went out of his way to support an injured player on the opposing team during the game.

Sanders walked all of the way across the field to check on the injured opponent. He himself struggled to walk comfortably but the health of another was more important in that moment. Pretty cool.

This is something Deion Sanders does every game. It is not new. He always goes out to check on an injured player, regardless of whether it is his own or not.

However, I think we all would’ve given him a pass if he kept his own personal movement to a minimum after yet another surgery. That did not stop him.

Others over self.

There are a lot of things you can say about Deion Sanders but he is extremely self aware. Yes, he can be pompous at times. Yes, he is flashy. No, he does not care what you think about him.

He knows who he is and he knows the impact he can make on others.

Take this interaction from Saturday as another example. Sanders gifted the hat off of his head to a young girl in the crowd. She didn’t quite grasp the moment but it is a memory she and her dad will never forget.

You can hate Coach Prime all you want. He will keep doing him.
