The 2024 college football season is off to a turbulent start for the Delaware State Hornets. The team reportedly missed its flight to Hawaii just days ahead of its opener!

The Hornets were set to fly out of JFK airport in Queens, which may be a three- to five-hour drive from Dover given traffic. While IAD in Washington DC is closer in distance, it offers just one weekly non-stop flight to Honolulu.

JFK offers multiple direct flights daily, which is the likely reason for the airport selection. Unfortunately, a “snafu” on the roads prior to their arrival caused a major hiccup!

Delaware State spokeswoman confirms Hornets missed today’s 10.5-hour flight to Honolulu because of a bus snafu to JFK airport. “We’re working on a plan,” she said. DSU and @HawaiiFootball open season Saturday.

What the problem was is unclear, but it resulted in a delay with kickoff just five days away.

The Hornets are already five touchdown underdogs. They didn’t need any extra adversity!

Luckily, it doesn’t seem the missed flight will set the team back too far in terms of arrival time. Brandon Marcello of 247 Sports reports that new accommodations have been made and that Delaware State is set to land in Hawaii tomorrow.

Delaware State has rebooked its travel and is “still scheduled to arrive on time in Hawaii tomorrow,” a spokeswoman for DSU tells 247 Sports/CBS Sports. Delaware State and Hawaii play Saturday in Week 0. DSU built an “extra day” into its travel plans “just in case” of an issue.

Delaware State and Hawaii help get the 2024 college football season underway with a Week 0 showdown on Saturday night. The Rainbow Warriors went 5-8 last season though they did win three of their last four contests. That included an upset of Air Force.

Delaware State, meanwhile, went 1-10.

The game is set to kick off at 11:59 PM ET and 5:59 PM local time in Honolulu. Hopefully, the Hornets don’t run into anymore travel issues!
