Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz finished the first half of Sunday’s NFL game against the Buffalo Bills with the loudest doink of all-time. If you listened closely enough, you could hear the miss all of the way down on Long Island.
It was impressively loud and left me with a lot of questions.
Lutz is currently in his second year with the Broncos after seven seasons with the Saints. He made 31 of 34 field goal attempts during the NFL regular season and did not miss an extra point.
Unfortunately, his leg failed him when it mattered most on Sunday. Wil Lutz could not tie the game right before halftime.
Buffalo punted the ball away to Denver with just under two minutes left in the second quarter. Bills wide receiver Mack Hollins absolutely destroyed Marvin Mims on the return.

Down by three points, rookie quarterback Bo Nix led a 60-yard drive to the opposing 32-yard-line. Lutz trotted out for a 50-yard three-point try with five seconds left. His kick looked good off of the foot until it swung right at the last moment and collided with the upright. DOINK!
Except it wasn’t a doink. It was much too loud to be referred to as a doink.
The kick either hit at the exact right spot, or near a CBS microphone because it made a noise that is unlike any missed field goal in NFL history. Legend says the upright has yet to stop ringing.

I am not well versed in acoustics or audio, but I would be fascinated to know what made this doink so much louder than all of the doinks to come before. Is it something to do with the cold? Did CBS put a microphone closer to the upright? Are the goal frames in Buffalo more hollow than the other 31 teams in the National Football League? I don’t know the answer but someone smarter than me might have an idea.
Whatever the reason, Wil Lutz pulled off the loudest doink of all-time!
