The Denver Broncos were one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 NFL season. In the second year under head coach Sean Payton, Denver went 10-7 and secured the a spot in the AFC Wild Card round. While rookie quarterback Bo Nix got much of the plaudits, it was the Broncos’ remarkable defense that lead the way.

Denver allowed the second least yards per play behind only the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the third fewest points per game behind Philly and the Los Angeles Chargers. The Broncos also forced the seventh most turnovers with 25. And on Thursday, Denver added an interesting name to its defensive coaching staff.

The Broncos hired Todd Davis as a defensive quality control coach. Before the move, Davis’s last job was with the local media as a full-time member of the DNVR Podcast. Now, there is a bit of caveat. Davis, 32, is also a seven-year NFL vet who spent time with Sean Payton in New Orleans in 2014 before playing for the Broncos from 2014-19.

In 2019, Davis led the Broncos with a career-high 136 tackles before retiring just two years later. Davis took a couple of years off before joining the media world and worked as a coaching intern for Denver and Payton a year ago.

“I feel great,’’ Davis told the Denver Gazette. “I’m really excited and thankful for the opportunity and ready to get to work.”

While it may seem like a unconventional move, Payton has shown in the past he clearly has an eye for coaching talent. And given Davis’ history, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he quickly worked his way up the NFL coaching ranks.
