The American League champion New York Yankees fell to the National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series in just five games, winning just one of them.
The Bronx Bombers put themselves in a virtually impossible situation by losing the first three games a series, which is a deficit that’s only been overcome once in the history of the sport (the Red Sox famously did it to the Yankees in 2004).
While the Yankees were able to stave off elimination by winning Game 4, their season came to an end in Game 5 in painful fashion due to the way the game played out.
The Yankees were able to race out to a promising 5-0 lead in the early stages of Game 5, but it all came unraveling in the 5th inning as a litany of errors allowed the Dodgers to score five runs, tying the game. Making matters worse is the fact that all five runs came with two outs.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever quite seen an inning like this. Especially in a World Series or postseason game,” Jeter said on the postgame show. “Look, the Yankees made some mistakes. You can’t make mistakes against a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers. That particular inning, you gave them six outs.”
“I’ll tell you what, you do have to get it to Gerrit Cole. He went out there, he pitched well, he dominated — he was basically out of that inning and then he didn’t cover first base,” Jeter continued. “And then he ended up coming back out, so you give it to him, I think the fans gave him a nice ovation when he came out. They appreciate that he went out there and he battled, but for the Yankees, you just cannot make that many mistakes.”
“Yeah, Derek, Cole was great, but that’s not the story. This is one of the greatest meltdowns that I’ve ever seen in 40 years,” added Rodriguez.

After giving Shohei Ohtani a $700 million deal in the offseason, the Dodgers were able to deliver a World Series title in his first season and will likely head into the 2025 season as title favorites.
