Detroit Lions General Manager Brad Holmes has confirmed that the team has had discussions about a potential contract extension for quarterback Jared Goff.
While speaking to the media, Holmes stated that the Lions have had “internal dialogue” about extending Goff’s contract and have also talked to his agent about it.
“We’ve had internal dialogue there, and we’ve had dialogue with his agent. And we’re in a good place right now.”
Goff, who is signed through the 2024 season, had previously mentioned in an interview with reporters in April that he had not had any discussions with the Lions regarding an extension. However, with the recent confirmation from the Lions’ GM, it seems that the team is seriously considering extending Goff’s contract.
The Lions have taken Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker with the 68th pick of the 2023 NFL draft, which may indicate that they are considering their options at the quarterback position. However, given Goff’s solid performance last season, where he scored 29 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and 4,438 yards, it’s possible that the Lions may make a short-term commitment to Goff.
At the age of 29, Goff is in the prime of his career and has demonstrated that he can perform at a high level. He posted the league’s fifth-best EPA per drop back in the 2022 season and helped the Lions reach an above .500 record. While his cap hit for the 2023 season is $31 million, the Lions may be willing to extend his contract to keep him on the team.
With the Lions’ GM has stating that they are currently in a “good place” with regards to the contract negotiations. It remains to be seen whether the Lions will finalize a contract extension with Goff before the start of the season. However, given the positive sentiment about his performance and the recent discussions with his agent, it’s possible that a deal could be reached in the near future.
