Devin Askew is going to play his final year of college basketball at a program to be determined. It will be his fourth time in the transfer portal and sixth season of eligibility.
The soon-to-be 23-year-old began his career right before the pandemic, which seems like forever ago.
Askew, a native of Los Angeles, ranked as top-40 player in the college basketball recruiting Class of 2020. He was considered a four-star prospect by Rivals and 247Sports and a five-star prospect by ESPN. Regardless of his ranking, the former Mater Dei point guard could’ve played almost anywhere in the country. Kentucky ultimately received his commitment over offers from Louisville, Arizona and Memphis, among others.
It was a big get for the Wildcats. However, Askew never quite panned out while in Lexington. He started almost every game for John Calipari as a freshman but he averaged only 6.5 points and 2.9 assists per game. Kentucky finished with a record of 9-16.
Things obviously needed to go in a different direction so Askew sought a fresh start elsewhere and ultimately transferred to Texas. That did not work out either. The Longhorns had so much depth at the guard position that his minutes were cut in half and he averaged 2.1 points with 1.3 assists.
And then it was back in the portal. Devin Askew transferred to Cal prior to the 2022-23 season. He stayed with the Golden Bears for two seasons but only played in 19 games over those two years because of hernia and foot injuries. Not ideal.
With one year of eligibility remaining, Askew moved back closer to home. The 6-foot-5 combo guard spent this most recent season at Long Beach State and averaged 18.9 points on 40% shooting, 4.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists. It was the best season of his career by a large margin on a really bad team.
Most people thought that Devin Askew was going to finish his career at the Beach. That is not the case!
He apparently has one additional year of eligibility because the pandemic year did not count and the NCAA granted him a medical hardship waiver for one of the two seasons at Cal. A sixth year is in the works but it will not be at Long Beach. Askew is going to transfer, again.
Long Beach State guard Devin Askew will enter the transfer portal for his sixth year of CBB, his agent Ryan Murphy (@Ryanmurphhoop) tells @On3sports.

This next team will be Askew’s fifth. It is his fourth different time in the transfer portal in six years!
Although Devin Askew is going to play college basketball for more than half of a decade, he will only turn 23 in July. That is rather uncommon for a sixth-year senior. The former five-star recruit was originally going to be part of the Class of 2021 but chose to reclassify to 2020 so he is actually young for his grade. Weird.
