Notre Dame pulled what is technically considered an upset win over Ohio State in college lacrosse during the first round of the NCAA Tournament and Devon McLane played an important role. He had an assist and a goal less than six months after he started a job as an investment banker.
That dream was put on hold in search of his second-straight national championship!
McLane began his college lacrosse career at Brown University in 2020 but his freshman season was cut short due to the pandemic. The blanket eligibility waiver granted to all spring athletes allowed him to essentially return as a freshman again in 2021, even though it was yet another modified season. He led the Bears offensively in 2022, which led him to be named as a captain for 2023.
With four years down, McLane decided to enter the transfer portal prior to the 2024 season. Notre Dame ultimately received his commitment and he registered 45 points off 37 goals and eight assists as the starting midfielder in all 17 games. The Fighting Irish won a national championship at 16-1.
Devon McLane had a great five-year college lacrosse career.
- 2020 — Freshman at Brown (shortened due to pandemic)
- 2021 — Sophomore at Brown (shortened due to pandemic)
- 2022 — Junior at Brown
- 2023 — Senior at Brown
- 2024 — Grad student at Notre Dame
Devon McLane was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team last year as a second-team All-American. He, at that point, decided to hang up his cleats and join the real world.
It was a great end to an impressive career… OR WAS IT?!
The New Jersey-native started a job as an investment banking analyst at Bank of America in July 2024 and stayed in that role through December. That was later put on pause.

McLane technically had one year of eligibility remaining and chose to leave Wall Street to go back to South Bend for the spring semester. The back-to-back reigning national champions returned their star midfielder after a brief hiatus for work. He scored 18 goals with 11 assists in 13 games but the Fighting Irish lost four times— and narrowly escaped with two of their nine wins.
Even though it was a “down year” for the program, Notre Dame absolutely dominated No. 4-seed Ohio State on its home field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by a score of 15-6. McLane scored wide-open a goal during the second quarter and added an assist to his stat line during the second half.
GOAL IRISH!

What a heads up play by Kavanagh to jump the passing lane, pick up the GB and find a wide open McLane for the goal. That's 4 straight goals for the Irish! Watch on ESPN2.#GoIrish☘️ pic.twitter.com/cdODhA3Rxn
A guy who spent six months as an investment banker in New York City last semester decided to run it back and played a crucial role during an upset win over the Buckeyes. Devon McLane is a living example of why you should never graduate.
It would be pretty epic if helps the Fighting Irish to make another deep run! And then it’s back to investment banking….
