Fernando Mendoza is expected to win the Heisman Trophy but Diego Pavia might actually be the bigger draw. That leaves Julian Sayin as the odd man out in terms of media interest.
He did not draw the same crowd as the other two at the press conference in New York on Friday.
This is not to say that any one Heisman Trophy candidate is less deserving than the others. Sayin and Jeremiyah Love both had incredible college football seasons. Pavia and Mendoza are just more exciting.
Julian Sayin was all by himself.
All four of the Heisman Trophy candidates gathered in the Big Apple prior to the official ceremony on Saturday night. That lists includes Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
Here are the current betting odds:
- Fernando Mendoza: -1200
- Diego Pavia: +700
- Jeremiyah Love: +15,000
- Julian Sayin: +50,000
Mendoza and Pavia are most likely to be named as the best player in college football so they were of the most interest at the press conference on Friday. They are also the best interviews in terms of personality. That isn’t a knock on Love or Sayin but they won’t provide as good of a soundbite.
With that in mind, the crowds gathered in front of Pavia and Mendoza. Sayin had only one reporter.
To be completely honest, I do not know the full context of this video. Maybe Sayin was the first player to speak with the media so all of the questions had already been asked. Yahoo Sports did not say.
However, the optics are pretty astonishing. Maybe this will be the start of the Julian Sayin villain arc.
Diego Pavia did not remove his earbuds.
Love him or hate him, Diego Pavia does not care. The sixth-year quarterback marches to the beat of his own drum. He speaks his mind. He does not apologize for who he is or how he is perceived.
That is a large part of what makes him so much fun to watch.
Pavia plays with an unmatched swagger but he does not want his confidence mistaken for arrogance. However, the 23-year-old is currently subject to criticism.
Pavia rarely goes anywhere without his wired earbuds. The headphones are with him on game day, on his walk from his car to the team facility, at the grocery store, everywhere. That includes the Heisman Trophy festivities on Friday. He wore them while walking around the city.

He did not take them out/off for photos.
He even had the headphones around his ears as he shook hands with a Heisman rep.

Diego Pavia removed the earbuds for his press conference and official photos but his critics on social media (of which there are many) question his lack of respect for the moment. Why could he not go without them?
BREAKING NEWS: Pavia does not care what his haters think. This is who he is. The headphones are with him at all times. He took them out when it mattered most.
