I cannot speak on behalf of the parents of DJ Jacobs but they did not look happy when their son committed to Ohio State. His recruitment is far from over.
It will be a battle right up until the pen hits the paper next… year.
I don’t really understand why an athlete would announce his commitment at this point in the process if he is still going to consider other schools, but this is not my journey. Perhaps it is a power play. Maybe this is it. We will know for sure as soon as the early signing period next December.
Who is DJ Jacobs?
As a consensus five-star prospect in the college football recruiting Class of 2027, DJ Jacobs has more than 35 different scholarship offers. The nation’s top-ranked defender can play anywhere in the country.
Jacobs hails from Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Georgia. He made 102 total tackles (65 solo) during his junior season in 2025 — for an average of 9.3 tackles per game — with 16 sacks, two blocked field goals and a safety.
At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, he is a powerful and explosive edge rusher who possesses the size, strength and athleticism to disrupt the run and pass with violent hands, centered balance, and a quick-twitch burst to gain leverage at the line of scrimmage. He shows excellent balance, lateral mobility and speed in pursuit. That allows him to fill gaps, set the edge, and chase the play from across the field in both odd and even fronts. His pass-rush technique could use some fine-tuning but his relentless effort, physical upside and position versatility project him as a major difference maker for a college program.
Whichever school ends up landing Jacobs’ commitment will be thrilled to have him. And, as of right now, it is Ohio State in the lead.
His parents did not look happy with Ohio State.
DJ Jacobs went live on CBS Sports to announce his college decision for 2027. He was choosing between Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Oregon.
The Buckeyes ultimately received his commitment but his family looked disappointed by his choice.
Jacobs called Ryan Day to break the news just 10 minutes before he made the announcement. However, it sounds like his commitment does not mean he is actually committed. This is not over!
The top-ranked recruit told Chad Simmons that Miami, Texas A&M, Georgia and maybe “one or two” other schools are still very much in the mix.
“I will still take some official visits,” Jacobs said. “I committed to Ohio State over Miami and Texas A&M. Those schools, Georgia, and maybe one or two more will probably get official visits. Recruiting is never over, so we’ll see who really wants me and who will fight for me. Ohio State is a top program. Miami is a great school and I feel very valued by them. You have Georgia and A&M too.”
National Signing Day is set for Feb. 4, 2027. There is still more than a year before Jacobs must sign a financial agreement with his future college football program. He is going to play in the Under Armour All-America Game and the Polynesian Bowl. The Hurricanes, Aggies, and Bulldogs (and maybe his parents) are going to try and change his mind over the next 12 months.
