To say that Doug Gottlieb had an unusual first year as the college basketball coach at Green Bay would be understated. And now his best player is leaving his program to play for his alma mater.
He actually took credit for the move!
Gottlieb, 49, was hired to coach college basketball despite zero prior experience as a head coach on any level. The university also allowed him to pull double duty. Not only is he coaching the Phoenix, he hosts a three-hour radio show with Fox Sports from Monday to Friday as well as a podcast.
It is a unique agreement that did not lead to success in Year 1. Green Bay was one of the worst teams in the country and finished with only four wins. There was quite a bit of controversy (for lack of better word) throughout the last five months, including an early-season incident involving Anthony Roy.
Roy transferred to play for Gottlieb after stops at San Francisco and New Mexico. He led the team entire country in scoring during the early going with 25 points per game.
However, the 6-foot-5 guard played only 11 games due to injury and a mysterious suspension back in December. Roy later apologized for his actions. We still don’t know exactly what happened.
Gottlieb made a lot of excuses for the Phoenix’s awful season and most frequently pointed to Roy. His star player was lost for the season on Dec. 14. And yet, Green Bay went 2-9 when he was on the floor… I digress.
Roy was obviously important to Green Bay and Gottlieb but he will not be back next season. He committed to Oklahoma State on Saturday after entering the transfer portal last week.
Doug Gottlieb is taking (partial) credit for Anthony Roy’s decision!
Gottlieb played three years in Stillwater from 1997-2000 and twice led the nation in assists. Consider this to be another assist, if you will. It appears as though the head coach played a role in Roy’s decision.
He posted two words with a wink to social media shortly after the move became official.
Loyal and True 😉

Enough said. Doug Gottlieb helped his alma mater land his star player.
I cannot say with absolute certainty, but I do not think this has ever happened before. This current era of college basketball is weird, with the transfer portal and NIL. Adding a Fox Sports radio host to the mix made it even more strange. For him to then lead Anthony Roy to Oklahoma State because he once played for the Cowboys is truly unlike anything we have ever seen!
