Doug Gottlieb is back in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons. The 49-year-old college basketball coach and radio personality threw a chair after Green Bay blew an 11-point lead during its first conference game of the season.

He also called his players “idiots” during his postgame press conference, which I am sure they will appreciate.

This latest crash out proves exactly what we already knew about one of the most confusing hires in college basketball history. The 49-year-old cannot get out of his own way.

Green Bay got off to a decent start.

Gottlieb was hired to lead the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on May 14, 2024 despite his lack of prior coaching experience. And by lack of prior coaching experience, I mean none. Zero. Nada.

To make the agreement even more unusual, the administration allowed Gottlieb to continue his primary role as the host of the sports talk radio show on Fox Sports Radio that airs Monday-Friday from 3-6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

He spent approximately 36 hours in New Orleans for the Super Bowl last February— right in the middle of a game week. Gottlieb called his trip a “nothing burger” and vehemently denied that it would have an impact team, which then proceeded to lose its 20th game in a row (by 15 points) upon his return.

The Phoenix ultimately finished the first season at a horrendous 4-28 overall with a loss to a D-2 team.

There are much higher expectations for Green Bay to succeed in year two. It actually got off to a decent start with wins over UMass and Iona, and close losses to Minnesota in overtime and Yale. Credit where credit is due. This team is much better than the last.

However, it also lost by 43 to Kansas, by 19 to St. Thomas, to Buffalo, and now to Robert Morris.

The Phoenix held an 11-point lead over the Colonials with less than four minutes left in the second half on Thursday night and still managed to lose. Yikes.

Doug Gottlieb threw a chair!

Green Bay squandered an 11-point lead with 3:54 left in the game. It got called for a 10-second violation with 35.7 seconds remaining. Robert Morris went on to win 80-78. This was a measuring stick type of game for the Phoenix, and it proved it can hang with some of the best team in the Horizon League, but it still managed to lose in demoralizing fashion.

Doug Gottlieb lost his cool. The second-year head coach threw his hands in the air and paced the sideline after the Colonials scored the eventual game-winner.

He threw a chair on his way back to the locker room.

It might be a stool. Whatever. He launched it!

Gottlieb went on to say his team “played like idiots at the end of the game” during his press conference. It was not his fault. It was the fault of his players.

Right or wrong, his players would probably prefer that he address them directly. I know I would.

This team is not bad but nobody was really talking about the much-improved Green Bay because it was only a matter of time before Doug Gottlieb stole the headlines with selfish behavior. And sure enough…
