Doug Gottlieb had never coached college basketball prior to this season. His first year at Green Bay has been nothing short of bizarre through 21 games and game No. 22 is not the exception.
He broke out a literal measuring tape prior to warmups because he apparently did not trust the height of the rims at Cleveland State.
Gottlieb is pulling double duty. Not only does the 49-year-old serve as the head basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, he continues to host a three-hour radio show for Fox Sports every day during the week. It is an unusual agreement that makes him look absolutely exhausted at all times.
Doug Gottlieb is not winning.
Unfortunately, Gottlieb’s tenure with the Phoenix has been historically bad thus far. His team is currently in the middle of a historic losing streak at 2-19. Green Bay lost every single game during the month of December after its head coach joked that he was not going to work during the holidays. He also deleted a post on social media that mocked women’s basketball after the Phoenix’s horrific second-half collapse.
Doug Gottlieb continues to insist that people outside of the program don’t understand what is going on behind the scenes and insists that his team is actually getting better. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Blah blah blah.
It is also important to note that star guard Anthony Roy has been out since December 14. Whatever. Green Bay is still terrible.
All of this goes to say that the Doug Gottlieb era has been unusual and it got even weirder on Saturday.
The Phoenix was in Cleveland to face the Vikings. Its head coach did not trust that the rims at the Wolstein Center were at the proper height so he sought out a ladder so he could measure for himself.
Apparently @GottliebShow doesn’t like the height of the rims here in Cleveland pic.twitter.com/dLfw7xyXHo

I don’t know exactly what happened. I don’t know all of the details.
However, I can confidently say that I have never seen this kind of occurrence in my many years of watching college hoops. Never before have I seen an opposing head coach demand that the rims at an opposing gym be measured.
To be fair, Doug Gottlieb had a reason. He was right!
Just a heads up the @gbphoenixmbb game will start at 2:09. Slight delay as they had to adjust one of the baskets in Cleveland. I’ll have the call in the Mixlr app.

Still, he continues to be the weirdest story in college basketball this season.
