Doug Gottlieb is doing something that we have never seen before. Not only is he the head coach of a program that is fairly relevant in college basketball, he also hosts a daily radio show with Fox Sports.

The 48-year-old looks absolutely exhausted by the grind.

Gottlieb was hired by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay back in May. He does not have any prior coaching experience. Prior to his time as a commentator, Gottlieb was a talented hooper at Notre Dame, Golden West (community college) and Oklahoma State, but this is his first job as a coach on any level of the sport.

In addition to the his venture with the Phoenix, Gottlieb currently hosts The Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio and often replaces Colin Cowherd as the substitute host of The Herd when Cowherd is out. He also makes guest appearances on other podcasts and shows.

As a result of the double duty, Gottlieb has the most unique schedule in college basketball. Green Bay played Ohio State in Columbus on Monday night. Tip-off was at 7:00 p.m. local time.

Prior to that point, here is how Gottlieb spent his day:

  • 7:00am — Wake up
  • 7:30am — Coffee with staff
  • 8:00am — Work out
  • 9:00am — Breakfast
  • 10:00am — Shootaround
  • 12:00pm — Arrive back to hotel
  • 2:00pm — Taped podcast
  • 3:00pm — Live on ‘The Doug Gottlieb Show’
  • 5:00pm — Off-Air
  • 7:00pm — Tip-off

The Phoenix ultimately failed to cover the spread. They lost to the Buckeyes by 33 points. Gottlieb and his team immediately traveled back to Wisconsin and returned home just after midnight.

That schedule does not include all of the time spent scouting and game planning. If Gottlieb is doing what he needs to do to prepare Green Bay for play, sleep is an afterthought. That appears to be the case.

Fox cut to Gottlieb on the sideline during the loss in Columbus. He looked… tired.

Even though it looks like an easy, luxurious gig, it is exhausting to be a radio host. The same can be said for a career in coaching. Doing both — at the same time — is taxing on the body and the mind.

Doug Gottlieb is doing something that has literally never been done before. The Phoenix took a major risk with this experiment and only time will tell whether it works out. Green Bay is currently 2-5 in Year 1.
