The issue of court storming in college basketball yet again took center stage on Saturday for a less-than-ideal reason.
Duke star Kyle Filipowski was seen limping off the court after he was involved in an incident with Wake Forest students who rushed the court following an 83-79 upset over the Blue Devils.
Hundreds if not thousands of Deamon Deacons students took to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum court before Duke players could exit following the loss. The result was one of the nation’s top players needing to be helped off the court by teammates.

This comes just days after UConn head coach Dan Hurley told a Creighton student he would knock them out following a similar incident.
WOW. We have received footage of UCONN Coach Dan Hurley telling a Creighton student “I will knock you out”
I’ve always respected what Hurley has done on the court. But this is a bad too far☹️ pic.twitter.com/UAsvfPkuJV

And only weeks after Iowa Hawkeyes women’s superstar Caitlin Clark was barrelled over by an Ohio State fan.

Thankfully, Clark did not suffer any long-term injury. Although Filipowski’s incident looked far worse.
Duke coach Jon Scheyer was furious following the incident.
“I’m more worried about the well-being of our guys…When are we going to ban court-storming?!”
Scheyer added that Filipowski suffered a sprained ankle. But he also noted that he didn’t want to take anything away from Wake Forest.
Still, the incident calls into question the safety of student-athletes. We’ve seen similar incidents in football games as well, and players often bear the burden of not responding to any aggression from fans who don’t belong on the field.
Several football conferences have banned field storming. Although that hasn’t done much to deter fans.
What comes next could be a pivotal step for the future of college athletics.
