North Carolina took down rival Duke in ACC basketball action over the weekend. Postgame fireworks made immediate headlines.

Fans stormed the court after the Tar Heels‘ victory. Opposing head coach Jon Scheyer says one of his staff members was punched in the celebration.

“It’s hard to talk about the game when I was most concerned for the safety of our players,” he said after the loss. “I don’t wanna make it about that, but… I got staff members that got punched in the face… That’s not what this game is about. That was a scary ending.”

Scheyer says one of his staffers was injured in the celebration. He provided an update on the injury Monday.

Scheyer said the staff member had a bloody lip after allegedly being punched and trampled in the celebration. He is doing better, according to the coach.

“That was a very unsafe situation for our staff, our family, and our players,” Scheyer said in a recent ACC Coaches Call. “I’m a big boy. I can take losing… He’s doing better…

“He got hit in the face, got trampled. He looked like he’d been in a complete brawl after the game… That should never happen.”

Scheyer called out the “unsafe” environment in Chapel Hill on multiple occasions. UNC defended its security protocol after the fact.

The ACC fined North Carolina.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that the University of North Carolina has been fined for violation of the league’s event security policy at the conclusion of its men’s basketball game versus Duke University on February 7.

The conference’s event security policy is designed to protect the safety and well-being of all student-athletes, coaches, officials and fans.

In accordance with ACC policy, North Carolina will incur a fine of $50,000 for a first offense.

All fines collected under the policy are directed to the Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship Fund, which benefits ACC student-athletes pursuing graduate education.

The Tar Heels were fined $50,000 for storming the court. They have accepted that punishment, according to Pat Welter of WRAL, but they also defend their actions in protecting the Blue Devils.

UNC says it followed its own protocol to get Duke off the court. The Blue Devils might feel otherwise.
