East Carolina “quarterback” Mike Wright is college football’s ultimate Swiss army knife. The sixth-year veteran owns the most interesting stat line in the sport.

Wright has played on offense, defense, and special teams. He’s made notable impacts in all three phases while showcasing a new talent in his most recent outing.

Wright’s career path has been long and winding. He was a three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class. The Georgia native signed with Vanderbilt, where he spent three years.

The passer played in 26 games with the Commodores, making 11 starts under center. He then transferred to SEC rival Mississippi State for a season before moving onto Northwestern in 2024.

Wright played in just three games last year, so he was able to redshirt. That, combined with the 2020 COVID waiver has allowed him six college seasons.

The 24-year-old veteran opted to take full advantage and finish out his career at East Carolina. He’s been all over the field for the Pirates.

The East Carolina football transfer has no position.

Wright admits this in his X (formerly Twitter) bio.

While his roster designation is technically ‘QB,’ he’d taken snaps in at least four different positions prior to last week’s Senior Day matchup vs. Memphis. Those included quarterback, wide receiver, tailback, and defensive back.

He added another to his list in the Pirates’ 31-27 win.

Mike Wright booted a 53-yard punt.

It was one of two punts he recorded on the evening. He posted an impressive 46.5-yard average on those tries. For reference, starting punter Tomas O’Halloran kicked three punts at a 46.7-yard clip.

Mike Wright didn’t stop there, though. He later sealed the game on defense by intercepting Memphis’s final Hail Mary attempt.

He truly can (and did) do it all!

Wright’s versatility is unmatched. No one in college football has made an impact in as many ways. Here’s his stat line through nine games.

Offense:
13 carries/76 yards/2 TDs
6 catches/39 yards
13 passing yards

Defense:
2 tackles
1 interception

Special teams:
2 punts
46.5-yard average

Wright was not going to beat out returning starting quarterback Katin Houser under center, even as a veteran transfer. He’s used his athleticism to find different ways to contribute.

In doing so, he’s become an East Carolina football fan favorite. We’ll see if he can check another position off the list over the team’s final two games.
