The Georgetown basketball team fell to Big East rival UCONN on the road in Storrs over the weekend. Head coach Ed Cooley was critical of the Husky fanbase after the fact.
He commented on what he believed was lacking support for the home team. In doing so, he showed a complete lack of awareness.
The Hoyas lost a close one to the Huskies on Saturday. Connecticut led by eight at the half, an advantage that would grow to 14 in the second half.
Then, Georgetown battled back.
The Hoyas used a late run to cut their deficit to 77-75 with 10 seconds left to play. The comeback effort came up just short as UCONN put the game on ice with free throws.
With the loss, Georgetown fell to 13-12 on the season with a 5-9 mark in conference play. The final result was not the first thing on their head coach’s mind in his postgame presser.
Ed Cooley criticized UCONN fans after Georgetown’s loss.
Ed Cooley’s takeaway from Georgetown’s narrow loss at UConn?
“Honestly, I was surprised there were empty seats up in some sections. I mean, you’ve got a national championship team. This place should be sold out every day. That actually shocked me.” pic.twitter.com/cS3ZnquHy0

“Honestly, I was surprised there were empty seats up in some sections,” he said of the Husky fanbase. “I mean, you’ve got a national championship team. This place should be sold out every day…
“Top 10 team in a Saturday night game. This place should’ve been bouncing off the walls.”
A final attendance of more than 10,000 fans was reported. That would be close to full capacity at Gampel Pavilion.
Cooley thinks the number was inflated. He saw enough empty seats to speak on the subject. He is likely the last person that should be talking.
Georgetown basketball fans don’t care.
The team has played in empty arenas time and time again throughout Ed Cooley’s three-year tenure. Unlike UCONN, the Hoyas do not currently boast a national championship caliber program.
Still, the school is one with a strong basketball history and a once proud fanbase.
Excitement for the team has been non-existent with Cooley posting a 40-51 overall record in Washington DC. They had the second-lowest attendance of any Big East team in 2024-25.
It appears they’ll finish low on that list again this coming season.
Georgetown played in front of one of its largest crowds of the year on Saturday. Ed Cooley was not impressed.
He completely disregarded the lacking homecourt advantage he helped create on campus to blast a league rival on fan support.
