Edgar Berlanga is making his Matchroom Boxing debut this weekend against Jason Quigley on June 24th at Madison Square Garden in a fight that will air live on DAZN.

Earlier this year, Berlanga made headlines when he parted ways with his previous promoter Top Rank after getting suspended for biting Alexis Angulo.

Hearn signed Berlanga, in part because he believes he can build up a fight between the Puerto Rican star and the Mexican Alvarez.

“I think the kid is a superstar, he won his first 16 fights by first-round knockouts that’s quite unique within itself…he has a huge Puerto Rican fanbase, we’re going to be sold out at Madison Square Garden this weekend, he’s in the super middleweight division, we know about the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry, if he is the real deal, he opens a massive fight against Canelo Alvarez’

Before Berlanga can count on a fight against Alvarez, Hearn says the 26-year-old undefeated boxer has to prove himself before earning a fight against the Mexican superstar.

“If he ices Quigley in a couple of rounds, I’m sure he’ll be calling for that fight but you got to prove your worth in a fight with Canelo Alvarez we know Jason Quigley is a world class fighter but maybe a Munguía or a Golovkin or a Ryder after this fight…But I really believe Canelo Alvarez vs Berlanga has huge potential in the future but we need to see Edgar make a statement at Madison Square Garden”

Berlanga will be taking on Quigley live on DAZN this Saturday.
