Edina is the most decorated high school hockey program in Minnesota. Unfortunately, the Hornets could not handle defeat during the state championship tournament and showed poor sportsmanship during a bench-clearing brawl with Moorhead in after the semifinals.
They started throwing punches after the final horn marked the end of their season.
Fights are going to happen in high school hockey. Especially in the playoffs. That does not excuse this kind of behavior after a loss. It’s a bad look.
Moorhead beat Edina in the Minnesota high school hockey tournament.
No high school hockey team in the state of Minnesota has won more state championships than Edina. The boys’ hockey team has won fourteen championships, as recently as 2024.
However, the Hornets were not the team to beat this season.
Minnetonka earned the No. 1 seed in the Class AA bracket. Moorhead earned the No. 2 seed at 22-4-1. Edina finished the regular season at 22-5-1 to earn the No. 3 seed.
The No. 2 and No. 3 seeds met in the semifinals on Friday.
For those who do not know, the Minnesota State High School Boys Hockey State Tournament (better known as just The Tourney) is one of the biggest sporting events in the world. That is not hyperbole. Fans from all over the state travel to Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul. The 18,000 capacity home of the Minnesota Wild is always sold out — and some. This was the line for standing room only:
Here's the Standing Room Only ticket line at the Minnesota State High School Boys Hockey Tourney. This is in addition to the 18,000 sold out seats inside the #mnwild's arena.

Sure would be a shame if people tagged a certain international hockey report account in the replies… pic.twitter.com/wpQbzHu3K5
The crowd is especially rowdy when Edina plays. Everybody hates Edina because they are the best, historically speaking. A group of fans were ejected from the game for an explicit chant on Friday.

I digress.
The matchup on Friday started slow. It was a defensive battle. Neither team scored through the first two periods. The 0-0 trend continued through the first few minutes of the third period.
Moorhead, the defending Class AA champion, scored three third-period goals to earn a trip right back to the big-school championship game. The Spuds defeated the Hornets by a final score of 3-1.
A brawl broke out
Edina was unable to handle the loss and showed terrible sportsmanship in defeat.
The heated brawl started when a Hornets player bundled over one of his opponents at the final buzzer. That prompted a Moorhead player to skate over and tackle him to the ground. Punches started flying.
A nearby linesman tried and failed to break up the fight. He ended up getting knocked to the ice. Benches cleared. Players from both teams launched themselves into the chaos.
Bit of a skirmish late, but the defending champs go back to the AA Final.

3 third period goals give Moorhead a return to the title game w/ a 3-1 win over Edina.

Edina lost its composure. Boos rained down on the ice.
Keeping it classy, Edina… 🙄 #thetourney #thetourney26 pic.twitter.com/OeHE5tTSil

The unfortunate ending to the Class 2A Semifinals is a stain on the program.
Fights happen and hockey is more fun when players throw punches. To do so after a loss in the state tournament is a poor display of sportsmanship.
