It seems like every year we get talk about expanding the college football playoff but it appears that an eight team playoff format is close to becoming a reality.
Sports Illustrated college football writer Ross Dellenger reports that several ADs are floating a playoff model that would see eight teams play and would include five power conference teams getting an automatic bid.
A Power 5 AD in New York this week said a specific 8-team playoff model is circulating around the CFB world that would incorporate bowls, including a bowl-sponsored national championship game.
The model:
– 5 auto bids for P5 champs
– 2 at-large
– 1 Group of 5 https://t.co/tTo387Udah— Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) December 11, 2019
It would probably take a few years to implement according to Dellenger.
The playoff is bound to expand, everyone knows that. The main questions are (1) when and (2) what model.
Whenever a move is made, the 4-team version would exist for two more years before expansion.

Here’s what this year’s college football playoffs would look like if they were expanded to eight teams.
In this model, going by rankings only, this year's playoff would look like this:
1 LSU*
8 Memphis#4 Oklahoma*
5 Georgia^
—
2 Ohio State*
7 Baylor^3 Clemson*
6 Oregon**auto bid
^at-large#G5The debate this year would have been over the 7 seed between Baylor/Wisconsin/UF

While the idea is definitely interesting a four team playoff system seems perfectly fine at the moment.
