The Dan LeBatard Show/NBC Sports Boston
If you’ve turned into ESPN in recent months and years, you’ll notice it’s as much about the drama between personalities and athletes as it is about sports highlights, if not more so — especially if Stephen A. Smith is involved. That ethos has not extended to the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini situation, however.
Despite the fact that The Athletic reporter, and former ESPN personality, Dianna Russini’s seemingly illicit relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was the biggest story in the sports world last week, ESPN barely reported on it.
Given how much the network loves to talk about the ancillary drama surrounding the sports world — and even spent time mocking the infamous cheating Coldpay couple last year — fans were quick to notice how little attention they’ve paid to Russini and Vrabel.
ESPN blasted for barely reporting on the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini situation despite clearly engaging in tons of sports media personality drama in recent years

ESPN really loved turning sports into drama until it was Russini and Vrabel, I guess 🤣

One particular example that sports fans pointed to was ESPN mocking the “Coldplay couple” — Kristin Cabot (former HR head) and Andy Byron (former CEO of Astronomer), who were caught on a Jumbotron kiss cam during a July 2025 concert in Boston — despite the fact that the story had nothing to do with sports.
Two private citizens that have no ties to sports whatsoever = rag on them all you want
Two public figures in the sports realm = SportsCenter, a show about reporting on and covering sports, stays silent

The “Coldplay couple” had nothing to do with sports but ESPN did stuff like this relentlessly but are silent during the Mike Vrabel – Dianna Russini scandal.

After initially backing Russini, The Athletic has suspended her as they conduct an investigation into her relationship with Vrabel. As for Vrabel, he’s skipping this week’s pre-draft press conference, seemingly to avoid answering questions about the situation.
