At the peak of his powers, Ben Foster was one of the best goalkeepers in all of England.
Foster made eight appearances for the England national team and played three seasons for Premier League giant Manchester United.
He appeared to end his impressive career in 2022, retiring after spending four seasons in goal for Watford.
But then a small Welsh club called Wrexham AFC came calling.
The club, owned by star actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, was filming a docuseries called “Welcome to Wrexham” as it looked to work its way up through the tiers of English football (which the Welsh club is a part of).
Foster had first played for Wrexham in 2005 on loan from parent club Stoke City. When Reynolds and McElhenney offered him the chance to return for a swan song, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.
He came out of retirement in March of 2023 and played eight matches for Wrexham, helping the club win promotion back into the Football League.
That alone would’ve been a storybook ending to Foster’s career. But he’s not done yet.
The club announced that it had re-signed the star goalkeeper to a one-year deal on Friday morning.

“I’d decided before the end of last season I wanted to do it, because it feels like home. I’ve never joined a football club and felt at ease so quickly,” Foster said of the move.
“We’re delighted that Ben has signed for the coming season,” Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said. “It’s a key signing for us because we all saw the impact, he had not just on the pitch but also around the training ground, and we are all looking forward to working with him again next season.”
Fans of the club were over the move at the announcement.
