Much like the infamous Fenn’s Treasure, a group has hidden treasure containing “$1 million in gold coins minted from Agnico Eagles Mines’ Detour Lake mine.” The treasure is buried somewhere in Canada and is the grand prize in what is being called “The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt.”
Fenn’s Treasure was a treasure hunt in and around the Rocky Mountains that was launched by Forrest Fenn, an art dealer from New Mexico. It took 10 years for the treasure to be found and resulted in people upending their entire lives to search for the prize and even resulted in some deaths. A new treasure hunt organized by one of the Fenn’s Treasure hunters was launched earlier this year and a poem is one of the key clues. (CTV News has already tried to break down some of the clues from the poem.)
The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt is a bit different in that it will not last for 10 years. If no one finds it by December 31, 2026 then the treasure hunt is over.

The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt is under way
The first clue for the Great Canadian Treasure Hunt has been posted online and it is, wait for it, a poem. An additional clue was released on September 3 which reads, “Though crystal clear and calm it seems, this mirror hides more than it gleams. A single step may seal your fate, best not disturb the water’s state.
The grand prize is 217 one-ounce gold coins that are “vault certified, physically held, and ready to claim.” There are also 12 monthly bonus prizes of six one-ounce gold coins worth $25,000 that can be found utilizing clues that will be released monthly.
The treasure is hidden in places that are publicly accessible – no special permissions required, safe to reach on foot – no climbing, swimming, or off-roading needed, and at least five kilometers away – from the homes, workplaces, or properties of the organizers or their families. You won’t need ropes, ladders, climbing gear, swimming or diving equipment, or an off-road vehicle to find it. You will, however, have to be Canadian to claim the prize. So if you’re an American, you might want to befriend someone from the Great White North before you go treasure hunting.
In addition to The Great Canadian Treasure Hunt and Beyond The Map’s Edge, crypto billionaire Jon Collins-Black has also set up the largest treasure hunt in United States history with over $2 million in treasure hidden across the country. So there is no shortage of treasure out there ready to be found.
