The Florida football program is under new leadership… again. After firing their fourth coach in a little over a decade, the Gators hired Jon Sumrall to spark a turnaround.
The pressure of success is already impacting his personal life. The head coach recently cancelled a trip to Italy with his wife in order to prioritize winning.
Florida is a premiere brand in the SEC. Unfortunately, results have matched expectations of late.
Urban Meyer won two national titles with the Gators between 2006 and 2008. Since, Florida has been in a downward trajectory.
Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain, Dan Mullen, and Billy Napier have all come and gone. Together, they amassed six losing seasons, three SEC Championship appearances, and no hardware.
Napier was the least successful of the bunch. He went 22-23 across four seasons. He was fired before the conclusion of 2025.
Florida boosters pushed Napier out the door. The writing surrounding his exit was on the wall within the first month of the year.
The Gators fell to South Florida in Week 2. From there, calls for his job were loud. Money men played a large role in his departure.
Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin met with a handful of influential boosters Tuesday, and was told continuing financial support depends on new direction within the football program, three people with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect the ongoing process, said embattled Florida coach Billy Napier could be fired as soon as this weekend. One thing is certain: Napier won’t survive another loss.

Napier went 2-3 in the weeks following that upset defeat. He was let go after the Mississippi State game in October. His replacement hopes to avoid a similar fate.
Jon Sumrall will not be outworked.
The former Tulane coach was a top candidate for Power 4 jobs this offseason. After a brief flirtation with Auburn, he was hired by Florida.
Sumrall’s track record is impressive. He is 43-12 across four years with Troy and the Green Wave. In that time, he’s been to four league title games, with one College Football Playoff appearance.
Sumrall has never missed the postseason or a conference championship. He intends to continue that trend in Gainesville.
He wasted no time recruiting, pulling double duty as head coach at two universities simultaneously. Despite staying on with Tulane in the playoffs, he pulled a Top 20 haul at Florida that included 29 transfers.
With the portal now closed and spring practice just getting underway, he had a chance to enjoy some downtime with his family. Instead, he prioritized his new job over his wife.
Ginny Sumrall is not going to Italy.
Jon Sumrall and his wife Ginny were supposed to go to Italy this spring break for their anniversary and her birthday…Then he took the job at Florida.

Jon Sumrall was scheduled to go on an anniversary/birthday trip with his wife in Europe. Those spring break plans have since been cancelled.
The coach says he has “too much s— to do” in order to get ready for his Florida football debut.
Ginny’s feelings on the cancellation are unclear, though she’s likely familiar with the everchanging demands that come with being a coach’s wife.
For now, the trip is postponed. The couple will not go to Italy this spring to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary.
Florida’s donors forced the domino effect with a swift firing of Billy Napier. Jon Sumrall hopes to avoid becoming the program’s next statistic. He’s keeping the focus on football.
Sumrall is intent on breaking the recent trend surrounding Florida firings. He’s getting paid more than $7 million a year to do so.
He’s clearly in it for the long haul, but if unable to meet expectations, there is a silver lining.
None of the last four Gators coaches have survived past Year 4. That leaves the door open for the Eurotrip to be rescheduled for his 20th anniversary – and he might be able to celebrate on Florida’s dime!
