Florida Gulf Coast was on the verge of a college baseball upset against Georgia on Friday night. However, the Eagles completely choked and it led to the ouster of their social media admin.

He or she made an ill-advised post that has since been deleted because of its bad luck.

Admittedly, I think FGCU was making a self-deprecating joke— and a good one at that. I don’t have reason to believe that anyone actually got fired because of a not-so-subtle jab that very quickly soured. But with that being said, it is much funnier to imagine that somebody on staff was reassigned because he or she made a joke that proved to be a massive college baseball jinx.

The Eagles did not waste any time in the top of the first. They plated five runs right out of the gate and jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs got one of the runs back in the bottom of the third. A score of 5-1 held until the fifth inning.

That is when the jinx occurred. Florida Gulf Coast took a direct shot at the SEC with a post on X.

Georgia proceeded to score three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to get back within one. It later took a 9-7 lead in the sixth inning. Uh oh… Maybe they are SEC after all!

The Eagles responded with a solo shot in the eighth and tied the game at nine in the ninth. They had three outs to force a 10th inning. They were unable to do so.

A lead-off hit-by-pitch, two walks and two errors led to a walk-off fielder’s choice for the Bulldogs.

As soon as the game went final, Florida Gulf Coast deleted its post about the SEC. It also announced that its social media administrator had been relieved of his or her duties.

I am sure this is just a joke. If I had to guess, the same person who posted the jinx probably posted the final score graphic and self-deprecating jab. Maybe not. Either way, this one did not age well!
