Florida State safety Conrad Hussey is no longer with the team. The news comes in fall camp just 18 days before the Seminoles‘ season opener vs. Alabama.

Hussey was expected to make an impact in the 2025 campaign. That will no longer be the case. The decision to leave immediately followed defensive coordinator Tony White’s ultimatum to players.

Now, the ‘Noles will be one man short in the secondary while prepping for the Crimson Tide, who recently named Ty Simpson as their starting quarterback.

White will look to the next man up after watching a talented veteran walk.

Conrad Hussey has left his post.

The junior safety signed with the program as a four-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. He made an immediate impact with 14 appearances with one start as a freshman.

Hussey tallied 22 tackles, forced two fumbles, and intercepted a pass in his rookie year. It was believed that he’d take on a larger role in 2024 as a sophomore.

Those hopes would not come to fruition. While the defender made three starts, he was eventually benched amid struggles.

Word is that he’d fallen further out of the coaches’ good graces this offseason, for whatever reason, and had also been dealing with a hand injury.

Did Tony White’s ultimatum play a part?

The defensive coordinator was hired away from Nebraska this past offseason to turn around a unit that allowed 28 points per game last year. He’s challenged his group this fall while preparing for Alabama.

“There’s some guys who need to step their a– up,” he said in a recent press conference. “It’s unacceptable. We all need to make sure we’re on the same page, and we understand what’s asked of us, and what the expectations are.

“Either guys do it, or they don’t… There are some guys that you are expecting much more from that are not doing what they’re asked to do. They’re not doing what they’re being taught to do. Therefore, they won’t play.”

The timing of that ultimatum is interesting. White’s call to action came on Monday after the team’s second scrimmage. Conrad Hussey’s departure was announced on Tuesday.

Are they connected? Maybe. Maybe not.

The only thing that appears clear at this point was that Hussey had fallen down the depth chart as a third-year player. Unhappy with his position on the roster, he bolted.

Florida State will move on without him as they continue to look ahead to Week 1.
