Former six-time Formula 1 race winner Ralf Schumacher made headlines over the weekend when he announced on Instagram that he was in a relationship with another man.

Schumacher becomes just the third  Formula 1 driver to be open about their LGBTQ+ identity, joining fellow former drivers Lella Lombardi and Mike Beuttler. But Schumacher is by far the most prominent and most successful.

“The best thing in life is when you have the right partner by your side with whom you can share everything,” Schumacher said in an Instagram post where he is pictured with his unnamed partner.

Schumacher received an outpouring of support from across the motorsports world, including his son David, who currently drives for Mercedes in the German Touring Car series.

“I am very happy that you have finally found someone with whom you really feel that you feel very comfortable and secure, no matter if you a man or a woman, I am 100% behind you dad and wish you all the best and congratulations,” David said in a comment on the post.

German television personality Carmen Geiss also shared several photos of Schumacher and his partner that both men shared on their Instagram stories.

“I want to tell you about a person who plays a very special role in my life. For many years I have known and love him infinitely. His presence in my life is a blessing, and our deep connection has only grown stronger over the years,” Geiss wrote. “This wonderful man has an equally wonderful son who means a lot to him and who has been a source of joy and pride for him through many ups and downs. Together they have shared unforgettable moments and built a strong, loving relationship that is shaken by nothing.”

Schumacher, 49, is the younger brother of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher.
