Reports out of his native Cameroon state that former UFC heavyweight champion turned boxer Francis Ngannou was involved in a motorcycle accident over Easter weekend, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old girl. Multiple publications out of the country claim that the girl suffered severe injuries to her arm and leg before Ngannou personally rushed her to Yaounde General Hospital, where she later passed away.
Cameroonian publications Camer.be, Lebledparle and ActuCameroun report that Ngannou offered to pay the entirety of the medical expenses for the young woman. Each article provides separate accounts of the incident, as details remain murky. Circumstances regarding the crash remain unknown, but some reports suggest that Ngannou’s vehicle collided with a motorcycle.
Reported Motorcycle Accident Is Second Recent Tragedy Involving Francis Ngannou
Ngannou last fought on October 19, 2024, when he made his PFL debut against Renan Ferreira. Ngannou won the MMA fight, his first since facing Ciryl Gane in the UFC more than two years prior, by first-round knockout. The 38-year-old left the UFC following the Gane fight and transitioned to boxing, where he impressed many when he lost a split-decision fight to then heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in October of 2023.
Ngannou then continued his foray into boxing against former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. The two fought in March of 2024, with Joshua walking away with a second-round knockout victory.
Neither Ngannou nor his representatives have spoken publicly about the alleged motorcycle crash. If reports are true, it marks the second tragedy in as many years for Ngannou. The fighter tragically and suddenly lost his 15-month-old son in 2024 after doctors discovered a brain malformation.
Ngannou drew praise for the immense strength he showed while discussing the heartbreaking moment during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. He revealed that he had been in Saudi Arabia at the time of his son’s passing, which occurred fairly suddenly.
