The San Diego Padres took a 2-1 series advantage over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS on Tuesday with a 6-5 win in Petco Park. The Padres’ offense did all of its damage in a huge second inning.
That six-run outburst was sparked by a controversial play made possible by a heads-up move by Manny Machado. The ploy caused controversy among MLB viewers.
With Machado on first base, teammate Jackson Merrill hit a sharp groundball to Freddie Freeman. Off the bat, it seemed the perfect double play scenario to allow the Dodgers to empty the bases and grab two quick outs. It ended with everyone reaching safely, however.
Freeman attempted to get the force out at second base, but Machado appeared to purposely move into the first baseman’s throwing lane. The relay ricocheted off the baserunner’s shoulder and sailed into the outfield.

San Diego would put six runs on the scoreboard after the fact, though many believed Manny Machado should’ve been called out for interference.
Not that I’m torn up about it, but isn’t this illegal??? This was the beginning of a 6-run rally that literally decided a playoff game. I can understand the 2nd base ump not making a call because of angle, but that fella in all black standing next to 1st base had a perfect view!

After the game, reporters asked Freeman about the play.
“I would’ve done the same thing as a baserunner, to banana,” Freeman said. “Usually, you’re supposed to do it after one or two steps in the dirt, but I would’ve done the same thing as a baserunner… That’s what we’re taught as baserunners, and he did it there.”

While it proved costly for the Dodgers, Freeman says he would’ve done the same had the roles been reversed. Manny Machado’s baserunning tactic proved to be the difference in the one-run contest.
Los Angeles will now look to get even when the two rivals face off Wednesday in Game 4.
