Gareth Southgate has been able to get England deep into tournaments at a rate higher than any other England manager in decades. But, given the fickle nature of the England fan base, the fact that he hasn’t won any major competitions yet has him operating on a still pretty short rope.

After a sluggish 1-0 win over Serbia on Sunday in their first group game at UEFA Euro 24, English fans were hoping to see a more exciting and positive performance against Denmark on Thursday. But, that’s not what they got, and Gareth Southgate is under significant fire.

England struggled to a 1-1 draw against a game Denmark side that saw little in the way of excitement or attacking prowess from the Three Lions.

England only created 0.92 expected goals (xG) for the match, a pretty putrid tally given their impressive attacking talent.

It’s fair to say that England has the best attacking player in the Premier League and La Liga this past season in Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham. But, other than Bellingham’s header that resulted in England’s only goal in their match against Serbia, both have looked listless and appear to not have been deployed correctly.

Overall, many England fans think they’re playing far too defensively when the strength of this team definitely resides in attack. Instead, they look like an old, plodding England side from the late 2000s and early 2010s.

The slander towards Gareth Southgate is endless.

England came into the tournament as the second-favorite in betting odds at a lot of sportsbooks behind France. And, it’s a long tournament. Plenty of teams have grown into tournaments after slow starts. For instance, Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup in their opening match before going on to win the tournament.

Ultimately, if Gareth Southgate can’t get things turned around, he may be out of a job sooner rather than later.
