Brian Kelly either did not know the full extent of a severe injury to his starting quarterback at LSU or he lied about the health of Garrett Nussmeier. I don’t know which one is worse.
Both scenarios present a grim reality.
The unemployed college football coach, once again, comes out looking like a moron. His players are forced to pick up the pieces as they turn their focus toward the pros.
Garrett Nussmeier’s NFL Draft stock tumbled.
Nussmeier, a former four-star prospect in the recruiting Class of 2021, took over for Jayden Daniels as the starting quarterback at LSU in 2024. He completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,043 yards and 29 touchdowns en route to a record of 9-4.
It was a breakout year for the Louisiana-native that created a lot of hype for 2025. Nussmeier was a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy during the preseason. The Tigers ranked as high as No. 9.
And then it all came crashing down.
Garrett Nussmeier did not live up to the hype as a fifth-year senior. He made a lot of bad throws. He took a lot of bad sacks. The offense did not succeed.
LSU went 5-4 with Nussmeier as the starter. His production took a steep decline and basically tanked his NFL Draft stock in the process. A quarterback who was projected as a first-round pick back in August rapidly plummeted into the late rounds of the NFL Draft throughout the disappointing season.
Brian Kelly forced him to play through an injury.
Although Nussmeier did not play well, there was a tangible reason for the poor play. Brian Kelly revealed that the 23-year-old was still dealing with a “torso injury” during a press conference on Sept. 15.
This wasn’t a secret. It first went public during training camp at the beginning of August.

However, the head coach repeatedly tried to downplay the severity of the issue.

Kelly either did not know the full extent of his starting quarterback’s injury or chose to ignore reality and lied. Given what we know about him, I’m going with the latter.
“… the bottom line is [Nussmeier] was healthy,” he said after a win over South Carolina in October. “His ab injury is on the right side of it where he feels good, and he didn’t feel any pain on Sunday coming in. So, that’s a really, really good sign for us moving forward.”
There was some chatter at the beginning of October about the need for surgery. Kelly called it “misinformation” and referred to the rumors as “silly.”
The head coach at LSU consistently tried to downplay the injury. He refused to let him heal.
The truth always rises to the top.
Garrett Nussmeier is currently in Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine with the NFL Draft less than two months away. He projects as a mid-to-late round pick after his disastrous performance in 2025.
When asked about his injury and its impact on performance, Nussmeier did not hold back. The injury occurred on the second day of fall camp. At no point did he get healthy like Kelly said. A sharp pain in his abdominal prevent him from throwing a football.
LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier said his injury occurred Day 2 of fall camp:

“How much did it affect me? I think it was pretty evident.

This is after Nussmeier already said he “couldn’t use his core” during the season. That seems like a problem when you’re the starting quarterback for LSU!
Meanwhile, Brian Kelly forced him to play and made it sound like he was actually healthy. Yikes.
