George Pickens finished his third season with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the organization’s leading receiver. Although he does see signs of improvement on offense year over year and continues to be the best pass-catcher on the team, he is not optimistic about the future.

The 23-year-old did not mince his words.

Pickens, a second round NFL Draft pick in 2022, had one of the most interesting seasons in the league. He allegedly showed up late to team activities on multiple occasions, wore eye black with profanity during games, fought with an opponent and often showed a lack of effort when things didn’t go his way. And yet, he still recorded 64 catches for a team-high 987 yards despite all of that drama.

Head coach Mike Tomlin tried to reprimand Pickens for his boorish behavior but the Pittsburgh Steelers are much better when their best wide receiver is on the field so it is hard to issue a formal punishment that would relegate him to the bench. His value is far greater than his misconduct.

Although the Steelers made the playoffs at 10-7 for the second year in a row, they lost in the Wild Card round for the second year in a row. Saturday’s loss to the Ravens was hard to watch.

Pittsburgh’s offense totaled only 280 yards on offense with less than 30 yards rushing. George Pickens accounted for more than 30% of the total yards gained. The Steelers could not move the ball without him.

When asked about the offense, the star wide receiver said that he has seen signs of improvement. That does not mean he is optimistic about the future. In fact, it is the opposite. Pickens did not mince his words.

Yikes.

Maybe, just maybe, George Pickens didn’t understand the question. Probably not. The best player on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense is desperate for change. Is it time to fire Mike Tomlin?
