Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: a Georgia Bulldogs football player was arrested for reckless driving on Thursday night.

If you didn’t stop us, where have you been?!

Georgia defensive back Daniel Harris was was arrested shortly before midnight on Thursday night according to Lance McCurley of UGASports.com. Police charged Harris with five misdemeanors: Reckless driving, not wearing a seatbelt, operating an unregistered vehicle without a license plate, driving without proof of insurance, and having illegal window tint.

Kirby Smart Isn’t Addressing The Georgia Bulldogs’ Reckless Driving Problem

Harris’ arrest is just the latest in a loooooong line of automobile-related offenses for the Bulldogs under head coach Kirby Smart.

Though Smart’s comments over the summer make it appear that nothing is going to change.

“The number one thing (is) I’m disappointed. Anytime you have a situation like that you want your players to make better decisions,” Smart said when discussing his players’ numerous arrests.  “I always say you can’t be outcome related and I’m very disappointed in the outcomes but I am very pleased with our process we put in in terms of education, driver safety, requiring defensive driving & education … We have a really good locker room & I feel really good about that. I love the players we have.”

Those comments came after Georgia linebacker Smael Mondon and tackle Bo Hughley were arrested on misdemeanor charges including reckless driving.

Meanwhile, Smart suspended transfer running back Trevor Etienne for the Dawgs’ Week 1 victory over Clemson after he was arrested for driving under the influence.

Harris became the 20th Georgia football player incarcerated for driving-related offenses since the January 15, 2023 according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

That’s the date of the vehicle accident that killed offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy. LeCroy was racing a vehicle with other members of the football team while under the influence of alcohol. Willock was a passenger.

Ultimately, Smart cannot control what his players do at every waking moment. But until he shows players there’s some sort of repercussions for their actions, this will keep happening. Hopefully, he does so before another member of his team gets killed or seriously injured.
