A high school football playoff game in Georgia came to an abrupt early end when benches cleared for Gainesville and Brunswick during a nasty brawl. The underdogs lost their temper during a blowout.
However, both teams are responsible for their respective roles in the incident.
Officials ultimately ruled to end the high school football game early. There was still more than a full quarter left to play.
Brunswick held tough with Gainesville for awhile.
Gainesville High School is located in Gainesville, Georgia, about 40 miles northeast of Athens. It enrolls approximately 2,400 students in Grades 9-12. The Red Elephants earned the No. 4-seed in the Class 5A playoff bracket to secure home-field advantage through the first three rounds.
Brunswick High Scholl is located in Brunswick, Georgia, about 70 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida on the opposite end of the state. It enrolls approximately 2,000 students in Grades 9-12. The Pirates finished the regular season at 8-2.
Although Brunswick was a heavy underdog, it hung tough with Gainesville through the first 20 minutes. Everything flipped when the Pirates, trailing only 7-0, were stopped just inches short on a fourth-down run inside the red zone during the second quarter. The Red Elephants went into the locker room up 21-0.
Georgia officials called the high school football game early.
Gainesville effectively put the game away with two big plays in the third quarter, including an 89-yard kick return touchdown to open the second half. It returned an interception 52 yards to set up an easy touchdown just three plays later.
The game was effectively over. And then it was actually over.
Things got chippy when Brunswick took a deep shot down field on the next offensive drive. Some initial pushing and shoving very quickly escalated to a full-blown brawl. Chaos ensued.

Coaches, support staffers, officials and security officers were able to separate the two teams after a few minutes. The officials decided to declare the game as a 42-0 victory for Gainesville with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. Brunswick’s season came to an early end because of the fight.
“That’s definitely not the way we wanted to end. It’s not what we represent at Brunswick High,” Pirates head coach Garrett Grady told the Brunswick News. “We always want to finish what we start. We’ve got to keep our composure, that’s the key thing. When something happens or escalates on the field, we can’t come off the sideline. Those are the little things we’ve got to fix.
“We’ve got to learn from our mistakes. That was a mistake, and everyone’s going to remember all the bad instead of all the good that we’ve done this season. That’s not the way we wanted to go out at all.”
The Red Elephants advance to the quarterfinals. They will play next against Langston Hughes on Friday.
