All of the headlines about high school football in Georgia were largely dominated by the legal battle that took place after an ugly brawl between Gainesville and Brunswick. Players from Jefferson did their best to change that discourse after their win over West Laurens over the weekend.
They showed the utmost class in victory.
To see this kind of mutual respect between high school football players who do not know each other is refreshing. Especially in contrast to what happened just two weeks prior.
Jefferson defeated West Lauren.
Jefferson High School is located in the small town of Jefferson, Georgia, approximately 20 miles outside of Athens. It enrolls ~1,250 students in Grades 9-12. West Laurens High School is located in Dexter, Georgia, approximately 150 miles south of Jefferson. It also enrolls ~1,250 students in Grades 9-12.
These two programs do not play each other during the high school football regular season. They met in the semifinal round of the Georgia state playoffs over the weekend on the Class 3A level of competition.
Jefferson earned the No. 1 seed. West Laurens earned the No. 4 seed. The Dragons ultimately defeated the Raiders by a final score of 17-13. It was a hard-fought matchup that was close throughout all four quarters.
Their lack of familiarity makes the postgame sportsmanship even more admirable. They are strangers!
Georgia high school football games do not always end in a brawl!
The eyes of the entire nation were on Georgia over the last few weeks. A wild brawl between Gainesville and Brunswick resulted in a contentious legal battle over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Everything ultimately sorted itself out but it was a stain on the Peach State.
The Class 3A playoff game on Saturday presented a stark contrast to what happened in the early rounds. It was great a reminder of what really matters. Not the scoreboard. Not the game. People.
Many West Laurens players hung their heads in defeat. Some of them laid on the ground, overcome with emotion. Players from Jefferson went out of their way to show their respect for the opponent. The Dragons shared an embrace with the Raiders before they returned to the sideline for the celebration, as captured by Lane McCurley.
For the last two weeks, everyone saw the brawl between Gainesville and Brunswick. However, stuff like this needs to be seen more. Several Jefferson players come over and console a few of West Laurens’ players. Pure class by the Dragons after a hard-fought win over the Raiders. pic.twitter.com/GUBuJ2oO9s

Shoutout to head coach Travis Noland and his staff for instilling such class in his players. And shoutout to their parents for raising such great young men.
